Army Publication #ST31-180, AMEN

I just bought a book that was published for the Special Forces back in the sixties. I was looking for survival strategies that I could teach my boys. I got them... and a lot more. If you want to know how to make homemade napalm, I've got the recipe. If you are interested in destroying a bridge (any type) I know where to place the charges to bring it down, quickly and cleanly. If you want to know where to pop smoke to call in the Hueys I know how to get it done. If you want to know the radio codes for everything I've got a list. I've not memorized those yet since I don't radio any Green Berets. My favorite part of the book is the Special Forces prayer that is printed on the back cover. I will teach it to my boys.

Special Forces Prayer

Almighty GOD, Who art the Author of liberty and the
Champion of the oppressed, hear our prayer.

We, the men of the Special Forces,
acknowledge our dependence upon Thee in the
preservation of human freedom.

Go with us as we seek to defend the defenseless
and to free the enslaved.

May we ever remember that our nation,
whose motto is "In God We Trust,"
expects that we shall acquit ourselves with honor,
that we may never bring shame upon
our faith, our families, or our fellow men.

Grant us wisdom from Thy mind,
courage from Thine heart, strength from Thine arm,
and protection by Thine hand. It is for Thee
that we do battle, and to Thee belongs the
victor's crown.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the
power and glory, forever, AMEN.

What looks like a sheep but smells like a wolf?

Have you seen Hillary Clinton? Have you seen her lately?

Hillary will not commit to a presidential run in 2008 but she seems to be slipping into the sheep's clothing lately. Except for primary season (and Howard Dean) Democrats dress up in elaborate costumes to hide who they really are when they wish to woo the American voter. Remember John Kerry in his camo outfit going duck hunting? Well, Hillary is putting on the disguise that is the precursor to a new run for office outside of New York. She has recently used the word God in a coherent sentence. She has recently made claims that she has always been a "praying person." She has even backed off of her pro choice rhetoric. In a speech she gave Monday she described abortion as a "sad, even tragic choice for many, many women." The crowd didn't recognize the Hillary they thought was coming to speak to them and many were reported to have audibly gasped and shaken their heads as she made these comments.

Here's the question that comes to my mind: If Hillary has to act like Laura to get elected to George's office, why don't we just elect Laura?

Unfulfilled Desires (Rated G)

I watched two ballgames yesterday. My wife of almost 11 years couldn't believe it because I used to not care at all about televised sports. Anyway, I watched the playoffs to see who was going to the Superbowl this year. As you know, the Eagles beat the Falcons and the Patriots beat the Steelers.

I rooted for Atlanta and Pittsburgh. I love an underdog. I love to watch a team who's been told that they're not good enough. I love to watch a team who's been written off. I love to watch the persistence and courage demonstrated by a team who gets down in the first half and then comes back to win the ballgame.

Actually, the Falcons and the Steelers were both a little bit disappointing yesterday. They played... but they didn't really overcome the hurdles. In both games, to varying degrees, the Eagles and the Patriots showed why they were favored. They played better football from start to finish and are to be commended for their efforts. Still, I hung on to the end of each game, hoping that the Falcons and the Steelers would dig down inside, find some strength, make some plays and turn the tide of the game in their favor.

I watched. I waited. I hoped. To no avail. However, my faith in the resilience of man remains undamaged. My desire to see a "come from behind victory" remains unfulfilled.

Just 'cause you won doesn't mean you're better

Today, our President re-elect was re-inaugurated. DC was shut down. Secret Service took control of everything within 5 miles of the White House. High tech spookware spied on everyone, looking for the first hints of evil thoughts and evil deeds. There were concerts, black tie parties, white tie parties, live broadcasts, dignitaries, fancy dinners and all the requisite Washingtonian hoopla.

The price tag for this is going to be $40 million. Pretty staggering amount of money considering we're only talking about a weeks worth of parties. That's a LOT of money. The amount of money being spent has caught the attention of several whiney liberal columnists. The comments have ranged from "pay off the national debt" to "send more relief to the tsunami victims" to "rebuild Iraq" with the money that is being spent on this big party. Yep. They are claiming the moral high ground in this situation, sniffing that if Bush were truly a compassionate conservative surely he could find a better use for this money.

Well, yes he could. He could have done the inauguration in a White House hallway and saved the private donors who payed for this big party (No, your tax dollars are not paying for all of this partying.) an immense amount of money. Or he could have asked them to donate it to a worthy cause, like tsunami victims or the rebuilding of Iraq. Maybe he should have.

What I wish to point out is that the moral high road is only taken when the liberals can impugn a conservative. For instance, none of the columnists I read had anything negative to say about Clinton's inaugural extravaganza(let alone all the other sleaze he brought to the office). Clinton spent 25% more (adjusting for inflation of course)on his second inauguration than Bush is spending. Did the liberal press pout and whine about those dollars being poorly spent? Did they offer Clinton any alternatives to spending all that money on a week of parties? Nope. They partied and partied and partied and then wrote columns about how they wished it could go on forever. They proposed that we change the name of Washington to Clintonville.

Did the liberal press gripe about George Soros spending hundreds of millions (only a fraction of his fortune) in an attempt to ensure that Bush was not re-elected? Did anyone suggest that Soros try to squeak by on $1 billion dollars and spend his remaining $6 billion on Iraq or tsunami victims or welfare mothers? Nope.

Does the liberal press wring their hands about the millions of dollars that Hollywood actors, producers, writers, etc. will spend on the evening of Oscar night? You know that there will be actresses wearing $500,000.00 necklaces and $50,000.00 dresses. You know they will all drive up in gas guzzling limousines. You know they will have the most expensive caviar and the best champagne. Couldn't that money be better spent on homeless children in the Sudan? Where's the outrage over these ridiculous wastes of money?

Just like John Kerry, trying to fake the "religious believer" when he's in an urban church and trying to fake the "gun totin' outdoorsman" when he's out in the country it all rings hollow. The moral superiority is ripe for the taking in this country. We do alot of ridiculous things. We over indulge ourselves day and night. We could be called to account for all manner of perversions and extravagances. But if the light of moral clarity is only shining on one partisan group it amounts to nothing more than a childish display, a poor loser pouting and calling the winner dirty names.

NO THANKS!

Sri Lanka, hard hit by the tsunami (and years of civil war before that) had the poor taste to look the gift horse in the mouth. They refused Israel's offer of food and medicine if Israeli military personnel would be on the planes that delivered it. Yes, they were willing to allow their citizens to continue to suffer and die if they had to tolerate the Israeli military being on their soil.

Indonesia's government has done something similar to the US. Our military helicopters and cargo planes were airlifting the wounded from the remotest regions to hospitals (some built and staffed by US military doctors) and flying in food and medicine. Now they have given us a deadline for getting ourselves out of their country. That's right. Their concern for their own suffering citizens is outweighed by their desire to disassociate themselves from the US.

A final example of ingratitude comes from Guantanamo. Many of the captured Afghani and Iraqi fighters have never had access to modern health care. They are receiving the very best medicines and treatments they've ever had from our military doctors. One detainee received $500,000.00 worth of medical care to correct a defect from his childhood. When asked if he would share any information that might help the US in their efforts to combat terrorism his response was immediate and cryptic. He said only, "Death to America."

Please do not fool yourself into believing that these terrorists (I'm beginning to enjoy the term Islamo fascists) will ever be content to coexist with the US or her allies. Evidence of this is seen very clearly in the lack of any gratitude for the aid moneys and aid organizations that come from American citizens, individually and from the American government.

And where is Saudi Arabia? Kuwait? What contribution is coming to these tsunami victims from these incredibly wealthy Muslim states? ZERO. That's right, folks. The Saudi royal family, who can casually spend $35 million dollars a month couldn't find room in their mammoth budget to send ANY money to tsunami victims. I guess I'm misinterpreting the Quran when I read:

"And let not those who hoard up that which Allah hath bestowed upon them of His bounty think that it is better for them. Nay, it is worse for them. That which they hoard will be their collar on the Day of Resurrection. Allah's is the heritage of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is Informed of what ye do."

and

"So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss."

Is there anyone calling out the Saudi's as stingy and greedy? Is there anyone at the UN holding a press conference chiding the Muslim nations in the world for not stepping in and helping the tsunami relief efforts? Why not? Fear of car bombs? Fear of Islamo violence? If so, then they've won.

Unbearable

A church trip was almost over. The kids and the parents were almost home. Thirty more minutes and they would have been home. A Suburban rolled and many were injured. Innocent, young men and women were bruised, broken and scarred. Their families are at their sides. Their doctors are explaining the recovery processes that will take place as these kids navigate the rocky terrain back to health. There is one family that is picking out a much more difficult path. Their son died that night. There are no rehab plans. There are no specialists to see. My heart breaks for them because I can't even begin to imagine a life without one of my sons.

God, we don't understand. Is there a reason for this? Is there a purpose for this? If we are your children, how can you bear to watch this family as they endure this unbearable sorrow? God, please have patience with us as we question.

Feelin' small

I'm just back from a business trip to San Francisco. I suppose most people think immediately of the Golden Gate bridge, those steep, narrow streets and the Piers. Several people suggested I see Alcatraz and Chinatown. I'm glad that I didn't.

I went over the Golden Gate bridge into Marin county and I followed the signs to the Muir Woods. The Muir Woods are a grove of giant redwoods preserved in a National Forest. They are magnificent. Some of the trees currently standing in this forest were alive long before Columbus sailed to the new world. Some were alive when Louis IV was on the French throne. Some of the trees were over 100 years old when Westminster Abby was built. I was humbled to stand at the feet of these giants and imagine the long, steady lives they lead. An individual man is such an insignificant, temporary speck by comparison.
The air around the base of the trees was cold. The Redwood Creek provided the gentle sound of water over rocks. I could see my breath as I exhaled and since there was no breeze the cloud of steam hung just above my head as it slowly dissipated. Moss grew on all the trees and most other stationary surfaces. Ferns covered the floor of this chilly rainforest. The sunlight that blinded the drivers crossing the Golden Gate bridge couldn't penetrate the canopy of the redwoods and where I stood on the ground was as dark as late evening. It was a thrilling, refreshing experience. I'd not trade five minutes among those trees for five days in the city.

Thank you God for the majesty of your creation. Thank you for the blessing of quiet time in your forest. Thank you for the cold, the dark, the strength, the beauty of that place.

Why I'll never be President

I'm almost 35. I was born in the US. I've never been convicted of a felony. As far as I can tell, I meet all the minimum requirements to run for the highest office in our land. Besides the fact that I don't possess any political ambitions and the fact that I've never held any office, not even in high school, there are reasons why I could not be the President of the United States of America.

I hate the UN. For some reason, the President still feels compelled to speak to the UN. If I were President I would not even reply to their threats or invitations. I would do all that I could to cut the ENORMOUS contributions we make to this organization of leeches and paper pushers. I would suggest that they all go home to their own countries. The UN may have been useful, even necessary at some point in the past. It's over now. Send them home. We've already got a bloated, ineffective beauracracy... called the Federal Government.

I couldn't tolerate being lectured by Senator Teddy "Whiskey Barrel" Kennedy. Ted, say thanks to your deceased brothers for creating equity in the Kennedy name. You've really distinguished yourself in the past 30 years... you're nearly as relevant as Jesse Jackson. Keep up the good work.

I don't have the restraint to watch our soldiers dying daily in a wasteland like Iraq and not want to carpet bomb the cities where insurgents hide in mosques and houses. Terrorists understand one language. Violence. I think they laugh and shake their heads as they watch our Senators huff and puff and get red in the face as we talk about what methods of interrogation are acceptable... what sort of legal representation are we going to provide to detainees... Look down at your hands. These guys would chop off one of them and watch you scream and bleed. If you don't answer their questions before you run out of feet and hands and ears, etc. then they'll just cut your throat. They can't imagine anything else. Send in the bombers. BOOM! Who's next?

I still refer to the Mexicans who illegally cross our borders as illegal aliens. I know it's become PC to call them "migrants" and "undocumented workers" but that's making a silk purse of a sow's ear. I've worked with some really good cowboys who came to this country from Mexico and worked hard to be naturalized citizens. The process works. If we don't enforce the border laws that we have we diminish the value of being a citizen.

I don't believe big government is the answer. I would work hard to dismantle and disempower many of the top heavy governmental organizations. The government does not need to be involved in bumble bee research projects, funding art work, buying flu shots or anything else that doesn't have to do with justice, domestic tranquility, the common defense, the general welfare and most of all, Liberty. The government has done such a lousy job of almost everything it's touched that there's no reason to give it more work to do.

I'm sure that there are many more reasons why I'll never be President (or even city councilman for that matter) but I think the list above will suffice for today's reading.

Steak Anyone?

The absurdity of capturing soldiers on the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, bringing them to US controlled property and then immediately bestowing on them the rights that are guaranteed to US citizens is mind boggling. There are elected officials in our own government who would like to see jury trials for all these prisoners of war, complete with defense attorneys paid for by the US taxpayers. ABSURD! Unbelievably absurd.

I can't believe we're even discussing the tactics that are being used to interrogate these prisoners. There appears to be widespread outrage that some of these terrorists are being denied sleep and being forced to listen to loud music around the clock and being forced to kneel around the clock. If these soldiers had followed any of the Geneva conventions, such as wearing a uniform that clearly identifies them as combatants or doing everything within their power to eliminate civilian casualties I might be more inclined to restrict the tactics that US soldiers are allowed to use against them. But they are not!

Need I remind you that these scumbags are willing to shoot children, blow up churches, bomb civilian police stations, cut the heads off of captured men and women, aid workers or contractors? Need I remind you that they were cheering while the WTC burned and fell? Need I remind you that they were thrilled when bombs destroyed embassies and ships and pizza parlors? These Islamic terrorists will gladly walk into your house, your office, your mall, your airport and detonate an explosive vest indiscriminately killing and maiming men, women and children. They are not fighting to defend a piece of land that they farm or a business that they've built. They want to die and they want to take as many Americans with them as possible.

There are people who enjoy a chicken sandwich but could not bring themselves to kill a chicken. There are people who enjoy eating a big steak but could not stomach the killing of the cow that makes that steak possible. I understand that. We've got a freedom in our country that is sweet to everyone who tastes it. It has taken hundreds of thousands of lives and billions and billions of dollars to keep that freedom on your plate. If you don't want to get blood on your hands, you have that luxury because of the men and women of the military who have put themselves in harm's way for you. Do not cry for the cow with steak in your mouth. Do not curse the butcher while you're eating the pork chops.

Reading this post may put you in a coma

If I thought anyone (besides my wife) read this blog I might take a moment to apologize for the lack of any posts in the last couple of weeks... but no one does.

The new year has begun. Our preacher even mentioned the resolutions we Americans make and notoriously fail to fulfill. I somehow made it through the festivities without resolving to do or not do something this year. The divine Mrs. L and I never discussed it.

I'm back into some of the routines that make me comfortable with my life. I'm working out at noon again. I'm in the office five days a week. I'm taking boys to basketball practice, going to church, cleaning the yard, doing dishes, etc. etc. etc. As much as I enjoy the time off, the parties, the food of the holidays I enjoy the routine much more. (I wonder why no one is reading this blog... oh yeah, it's boring ) I guess one of those routines will be writing this... this little prosaic jewel.

Welcome back. It's good to be here. Good times.
